The bottelpack® Blow-Fill-Seal machines
allow the sterile manufacturing of unit-dose inhalation
products without adding preservatives, such as Benzalconium
Chloride. This preservative may cause side effects such
as bronchial constriction, possibly resulting in insufficient
relief during an attack. The FDA has published a proposal
in which it is stated that all inhalation solutions for
nebulization should be sterile. It states "Contaminated
inhalation solutions for nebulization are likely to cause
lung infections, because the drug product is introduced
directly into the lungs in a manner which at least partially
bypasses the patient's natural defense mechanism".
The solution to the aforementioned is a unit-dose aseptic
filled container with a non-preserved inhalation solution.
